BMW World, Munich: 220,000 solar cells create a wave of energy.
“BMW World” in Munich was not only envisaged to architecturally reflect the core company values of flexibility and openness, planning also focused on the interplay of technology and construction, above all from a design and ecological aspect. A particular challenge in this respect was the integration of a photovoltaic system into the wave-like roof; a task superbly mastered by archtiects COOP HIMMELB(L)AU in cooperation with PV specialists. The system comprises frameless solar modules with Solar Cells from Sunways backed with black foil.
As a result of the desire for exclusive architectural aesthetics, a traditional, south-oriented PV system installed on stands was not feasible. Instead the solar modules were flush-mounted in a stainless steel cover above the roof drainage system. The use of black glass-foil solar modules with high quality Sunways Solar Cells more or less compensated for what was effectively a 16 percent output difference in comparison with a stand-installed system.
Solar value added thanks to Sunways: with a nominal output of 810 kWp, the approx. 8000-m² solar plant on the roof contributes significantly to the energy efficiency and image of BMW World.
